The chair of Australia's Family, Domestic and Sexual Violence Commission, Michaela Cronin, presented an annual report to parliament on Wednesday revealing that reports of sexual violence have reached their highest level since records began in 1993.1 Australians are experiencing "unacceptable levels of harm," according to the commission's findings.1
The report identified the family law system as one of two key areas contributing to ongoing harm, describing it as a place of "weaponisation and continued harm."1 Notably, nearly six in ten sexual assault cases occur outside the family home and intimate partner relationships.1 In response to these alarming trends, the commission has put forward eight recommendations designed to support the national plan to eliminate violence against women and children by 2032.1
