LIV Golf filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in New Jersey on Tuesday, carrying liabilities exceeding $500 million as the Saudi-backed golf league seeks to restructure and survive in a downsized form.1 The move comes after the Saudi Public Investment Fund abruptly terminated its funding support following the final event of the 2026 season.1
The league has accumulated total spending exceeding $500 million before the Saudi fund's withdrawal, with assets valued between $100 million and $500 million and total liabilities estimated between $500 million and $1 billion.1 Under the restructuring plan dubbed "LIV Golf 2.0," the league will operate with reduced scale, with players becoming majority owners and capital support from BC Partners.1 The reorganized tour will expand its player roster from 57 to 75 golfers and introduce a 54-hole cut format for the first time.1
CEO Scott O'Neill stated that "this process gives us the structure and time to pursue a landmark transaction that opens the next chapter for LIV Golf."1 Major creditors in the bankruptcy include players Joe Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, and Cameron Smith.1 Rahm said he remains under contract with "LIV 1.0" and is "very willing to fulfill it," adding that "time will tell" regarding the path forward.1
