A 21-year-old National Guard member deployed to Washington, D.C. as part of a crime-fighting initiative has been arrested following an armed confrontation with a female fellow Guard member.1 Zion Mitchell, from the Georgia National Guard, was taken into custody on September 1st, days after the August 25th incident that sparked the charges.1
The altercation arose from a dispute between Mitchell and his female colleague over whether her hair complied with Army regulations.1 Mitchell is facing charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm while committing a crime of violence or dangerous crime.1
The confrontation occurred in Washington, D.C., where more than 3,100 National Guard members from 18 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia are currently deployed.1 Georgia has stationed 531 personnel as of September 8th, making it the second-largest contributor to the deployment, which is scheduled to remain in place through January 2029.1
