Meta left hundreds of advertisements promoting applications designed to create child sexual abuse material on Facebook and Instagram for days without removal, according to an investigation released Tuesday by the Tech Transparency Project.1 The research identified 332 such advertisements that Meta failed to detect this year, with the majority promoting Chinese-made artificial intelligence applications and "face-swapping" tools.1
These applications were used to digitally manipulate genuine photographs of children—including images of European royalty and Instagram influencers—into sexual abuse content.1 Investigators matched multiple child sexual abuse material advertisements to real children's online photographs, with at least one case involving a 14-year-old Instagram influencer whose image was transformed into abusive video content.1 The U.S. Department of Justice has clarified that artificially generated child sexual abuse material causes comparable harm to authentic recordings.1
