Dozens of health clinics in Sudan are shutting down due to reduced global aid funding, according to international humanitarian organizations. The closure of 36 facilities supported by the International Rescue Committee has cut off access to basic medical services for approximately 473,700 people.1 This comes as Sudan's healthcare system, already devastated by over three years of conflict, faces a deepening crisis that threatens the country's most vulnerable populations.
The scale of the healthcare collapse is staggering. Before the closures, Sudan had approximately 6,500 primary health care facilities and 300 public hospitals.1 World Health Organization data shows that in the most severely affected areas, between 70 and 80 percent of health facilities have either closed or are barely operational as of September 2024.1 Aid organizations are warning that infectious diseases including measles, cholera, and malaria are erupting across the country. In Darfur specifically, measles has reached "major outbreak levels," with approximately 75 percent of patients unvaccinated.1
The funding shortfall threatens to worsen conditions in refugee camps and conflict-affected regions. In Gedaref State's Um Rakuba refugee camp, the number of aid organizations operating has plummeted from approximately 35 in 2021 to fewer than 10.1 According to Mohamed Mahdi, the International Rescue Committee's director for eastern Sudan, some facilities have funding only until the end of September.1 Sudan's conflict, which began in April 2023, has already killed at least 59,000 people and displaced 13 million others.1
