Sudan's healthcare system is rapidly deteriorating as international aid streams are being cut off, threatening millions of people already devastated by ongoing conflict. Medical organizations supported by U.S. funding face a critical funding crisis as American assistance declines1. The United States, which has been Sudan's largest donor, is shutting down USAID operations, leaving dozens of medical organizations without resources and forcing many health facilities to close1.
The humanitarian toll is severe. Since civil war erupted in April 2023, more than 33 million people require medical aid1. Across the country, healthcare facilities are under unprecedented assault: in 2025 alone, 1,620 deaths resulted from attacks on medical facilities in Sudan, accounting for 82 percent of all such deaths globally1. Medical workers face continuous threats, with attacks occurring with alarming frequency. Meanwhile, global international aid declined by 21.3 percent in 2025, a trend mirrored by European governments also cutting their humanitarian contributions1.
The consequences are visible in specific regions. In central Darfur, facilities supported by Doctors Without Borders experienced a 22.5 percent surge in hospital admissions between January and April 20261. By May 2026, forty-five medical centers across Darfur stopped receiving funding altogether1. In Gedaref State's Tanduba camp, home to 18,400 internally displaced persons, the closure of maternity and surgical wards has forced pregnant women to travel three hours to the nearest city for cesarean deliveries1. Aid presence has collapsed dramatically: the Umm Raquba camp saw aid organizations decline from 35 in 2021 to fewer than 101. Beyond healthcare, the crisis extends to food security, with over 19.5 million people facing "crisis-level" food insecurity and more than 5 million experiencing "emergency-level" hunger1.
