The United Nations Environment Programme and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition jointly released a report on September 7, 2026, marking International Clean Air and Blue Skies Day, revealing that every dollar invested in addressing climate change and air pollution generates approximately fifteen dollars in economic and social benefits.1 This represents the first time the UN has evaluated the health and economic losses caused by climate change and air pollution, as well as the gains from mitigation efforts, within a single integrated framework.1
The report, titled "Hidden Capital: The Economic and Health Case for Climate and Clean Air Action," aims to shift public perception of air pollution from an inevitable cost of development to a valuable asset worthy of investment.1 The assessment encompasses multiple diseases including diabetes, dementia, stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, and childhood asthma.1 Wang Shuxiao, a professor at Tsinghua University's School of the Environment and co-chair of the report, contributed to the analysis.1
