New York City Mayor Zohran Mandani announced this week the public release of historical documents regarding air quality in Manhattan following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, resolving litigation brought by the advocacy group 9/11 Health Watch.1 The files, dating back 25 years, reveal that city officials were aware of toxic air hazards at the time yet assured the public that the World Trade Center site was safe.1
The city plans to invest more than $34 million to publish hundreds of thousands of pages of air quality reports through an online portal.1 Officials discovered 68 boxes of documents last year that had previously been claimed not to exist.1 The records show that asbestos was detected in nearly all tested locations.1
At a press conference, Mayor Mandani stated: "People got sick because the leaders they trusted lied to them, telling them it was safe to breathe toxic air."1 Television host Jon Stewart, speaking at the event, remarked sarcastically: "To be fair, they just buried this information for 25 years."1 An October 1982 memo, known as the "Harding Memorandum," had warned the then-deputy mayor that New York City could face as many as 35,000 lawsuits.1 Deaths from illnesses related to dust and smoke from the Twin Towers' collapse have exceeded twice the death toll of the terrorist attack itself.1
