Researchers at Griffith University have identified a potential psychiatric advantage of semaglutide, the active ingredient in the diabetes and weight-loss medications Ozempic and Wegovy.1 The large-scale study, conducted across Sweden and spanning 15 years, found that semaglutide use was associated with a 21 percent reduction in the risk of psychiatric hospitalization among patients with bipolar disorder.1 The research examined nearly 15,000 Swedish individuals with bipolar disorder between 2009 and 2024.1
The findings suggest that GLP-1 receptor agonists may confer mental health benefits beyond their established roles in treating diabetes and obesity.1 Professor Mark Taylor proposed that GLP-1 signaling may protect the brain by reducing inflammation and cellular stress.1 However, the mental health advantage appears specific to semaglutide; other GLP-1 medications, including liraglutide and dulaglutide, did not demonstrate the same pattern of reduced psychiatric hospitalization risk.1 Bipolar disorder affects approximately 37 million people globally, representing roughly 1 in 200 of the world's population.1 The research team has called for randomized controlled trials to establish more robust evidence for these preliminary findings.1
