The Venice Film Festival showcased several high-profile films on Tuesday, headlined by a nearly four-hour documentary on Elon Musk directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney.12 The documentary, titled "Musk," examines Musk's power and influence through an unconventional approach: Gibney used an AI avatar to conduct interviews, a method approved by legal counsel, after Musk refused to participate directly.12 Gibney stated that upon investigating the facts, he discovered that the film "debunked the myth of Elon Musk as a modern-day Leonardo da Vinci."1 The documentary explores Musk's childhood trauma, early Silicon Valley experiences, modifications to the X platform's algorithm, and what Gibney characterizes as an "extreme" danger to democracy.2 The film will be released in North American theaters in October.1
Also premiering at the festival was the psychological thriller "Bunker," starring Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem in a narrative about an architect whose marriage unravels after designing an underground shelter for a billionaire.1 Directed by Florian Zeller, the film is slated for release by Searchlight Pictures in early 2025.1 Additionally, Casey Affleck's drama "Company," set during the winter of 1975 and examining grief and compassion, entered competition for the festival's top prize.1 The film was directed by and co-written by Affleck and features Nick Nolte and Ben Mendelsohn.1
