Nicaragua has brought a case before the International Court of Justice alleging that Germany violates the Genocide Convention by selling weapons to Israel, which the Central American nation claims are used in the Gaza conflict.1 Nicaragua's legal representative, Carlos José Arguello Gómez, argued that given the nature of Germany's political, commercial, and military relationships with Israel, "Germany cannot have been unaware, or in general should have been aware, that Israel is possibly undertaking acts which are possibly constitutive of genocide at serious risk."1
Germany has rejected the allegations and maintains that the case should be dismissed on procedural grounds.1 German attorney Julia Monal told the court that "Nicaragua's actions demonstrate its lack of interest in hearing Germany's perspective and its intention simply to bring Germany to court."1 As the second-largest weapons supplier to Israel after the United States, Germany faces scrutiny over its military exports amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.1 A ruling on the court's jurisdiction is expected later this year.1 This case follows a similar genocide accusation brought against Israel by South Africa at the same tribunal in 2023.1
