The Australian government has announced draft legislation requiring social media platforms to give users the ability to turn off algorithmic recommendations.14 Under the proposed Digital Duty of Care bill, users aged 16 and older will be able to choose between receiving personalized algorithmic content or viewing only posts from accounts they actively follow and groups they have joined.48 The initiative, branded "My Feed, My Way," aims to restore user control over their online experience.49
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese framed the measure as empowering individuals rather than expanding government authority, stating: "This is not about giving government control. It is about giving people control."34 Communications Minister Anika Wells compared the legislation to safety standards applied to cars, toys, and food products, noting that "tech companies can still grow rapidly, but are no longer permitted to cause harm, because online harm has real-world consequences."35
Platforms that fail to comply face penalties exceeding A$100 million.489 The legislation extends beyond algorithm controls to address broader online harms. Social media companies, gaming platforms, applications, and AI chatbots will be required to protect users under 18 from harmful content including eating disorder promotion, misogynistic material, pornography, and content glorifying crime.345 The eSafety Commissioner will oversee compliance and enforcement.9 The government anticipates submitting the bill to parliament before year's end.45
However, the proposal has drawn skepticism from multiple quarters. Opposition leader Angus Taylor expressed deep doubt about the measure, characterizing it as an attempt to "censor" social media, which Albanese rejected by reiterating the legislation's focus on user choice.15 Tamara Livesey, an internet research professor at Curtin University, noted that existing algorithm opt-out options are typically buried within menus, making them difficult to access.1 Green Party Senator Sarah Hanson-Young rejected the opt-out approach entirely, arguing that algorithmic feeds should be opt-in by default rather than opt-out.14 Some experts have also raised questions about what replacement algorithms would look like for users who disable personalized recommendations.1
