A legal dispute has erupted over the management of feral horses in Yuraygir National Park in northern coastal New South Wales, with advocates for the animals filing an emergency lawsuit in late August to challenge the authority of the National Parks and Wildlife Service to shoot the horses.1 The New South Wales Land and Environment Court has suspended related actions pending a final hearing scheduled for September 9.1
The controversy centers on the ecological impact of the feral horse population in the park, located on Yaygir and Gumbaynggirr Country.1 The horses cause significant damage to the fragile wetland ecosystem through trampling vegetation, compacting soil, eroding stream banks, and disrupting wetland habitats.1 These activities threaten the survival of endangered species within the park, including the azure bell frog, Wollumbin corroboree frog, and Olongburra frog.1 The National Parks and Wildlife Service has employed aerial shooting, ground shooting, and trapping methods to manage the feral horse population.1 Kosciuszko National Park removed thousands of feral horses following the reintroduction of aerial shooting in late 2023.1
