American labor unions added 411,000 members in 2025, marking the largest increase since 2008.1 The growth was heavily concentrated in states with collective bargaining protections, which accounted for 305,000 new members, while right-to-work states contributed 107,000 new members.1 Collectively, unions now represent 16.5 million American workers, or 11.2 percent of all wage earners—the highest share in 16 years.1
The regional disparity in union strength reflects broader wage inequality between the two types of states. States with collective bargaining protections now have 10.9 million union members out of 76.9 million workers, compared to 3.7 million members in right-to-work states' workforce of 69.7 million.1 Union members earn an average of 8 percent more than their nonunion counterparts.1 The wage gap between workers in bargaining-protection states and those in right-to-work states has widened from 3.2 percent in 2015 to 6.7 percent in 2025—equivalent to roughly $4,000 less annual income for median full-time workers in right-to-work states.1 Despite these advantages, wage growth in collective bargaining protection states lagged by 3 percent between 2019 and 2025.1
Public support for unions remains substantial, with 71 percent of Americans viewing unions favorably, and 47 percent wanting unions to have greater influence.1 Among young workers not currently in unions, 57 percent said they would join if given the choice.1 Meanwhile, 19 states passed 88 laws in 2025 to expand worker protections, including paid sick leave, warehouse worker safeguards, and restrictions on non-compete agreements.1
