Rapid deployment of renewable energy and battery storage across Australia has sent wholesale electricity prices plummeting to five-year seasonal lows over the past six months, with retail prices falling by as much as 10 percent.[1] Wholesale prices in the June quarter dropped 47 percent year-on-year, while Victoria experienced an even steeper 60 percent decline to 56 Australian dollars per megawatt-hour.[1] Renewables now account for nearly 50 percent of the grid's energy mix, marking a historic high.[1]
However, energy industry leaders are cautioning that this price relief may prove temporary. Origin Energy Chief Executive Frank Calabria stated that "not every winter will be this good,"[1] pointing to the role of mild weather and unusually low breakdown rates at coal-fired power stations in driving current prices. AGL's chief executive Damien Nicks acknowledged that "the market remains very balanced, with risks evolving over time."[1] Energy executives have raised concerns about grid stability as more than half of Australia's existing coal-fired generation capacity is scheduled to close before 2035.[1] According to market analysis, Victoria's expansion of renewable energy, batteries, and household-level technologies has "altered demand patterns, supported system reliability, and increased the supply of lower-cost energy into the market."[1]
